Everything you need to know before hitting the open road. Read through our policies, requirements and guidelines β so your adventure starts with confidence.
Terms & Conditions
These Terms & Conditions apply to all campervan hire in New Zealand. By making a booking or taking possession of the vehicle, you agree to these terms.
A written Rental Agreement is provided for every booking, specifying the vehicle, authorised drivers, rental dates, collection and return locations, charges and insurance arrangements.
The rental period begins and ends at the date, time and location stated in the Rental Agreement. The campervan must be returned by the agreed date and time unless an extension has been approved in advance.
Only the hirer and additional drivers specifically approved and listed in the Rental Agreement may drive the campervan. The campervan must not be lent, sublet or given to an unauthorised driver.
The hirer is responsible for ensuring all authorised drivers comply with these Terms & Conditions.
We will provide the campervan in a safe and roadworthy condition. The hirer should inspect the vehicle at collection and report any existing damage before departing.
The campervan must be returned in substantially the same condition as received, allowing for reasonable wear and tear.
The campervan must be used responsibly, safely and lawfully for personal, recreational and travel purposes. The following are prohibited:
- Racing, speed testing or competitions
- Off-road driving or driving on unsuitable terrain
- Towing
- Carrying more passengers than the vehicle is approved for
- Commercial passenger transport
- Subletting or lending the vehicle
- Any illegal activity
Smoking and vaping inside the campervan are strictly prohibited.
Pets or animals may only be carried with our prior written approval. Any cleaning, damage or restoration charges will be disclosed in the Rental Agreement.
Notify us immediately of any accident, damage, theft, breakdown or safety issue.
Do not admit liability or authorise major repairs without our approval unless immediately necessary to protect people or prevent further damage.
Early return does not automatically entitle the hirer to a refund for unused rental days unless otherwise agreed or required by law.
Extensions must be approved before the original return date and are subject to vehicle availability and additional charges.
Payments
Transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Here is everything you need to know about how payments work.
Rental Charges
Daily rental rates are stated clearly in your booking confirmation. Charges begin from the collection date and time stated in your Rental Agreement.
Fuel Policy
The campervan is provided with a full fuel tank. It must be returned with the same level. If returned with less fuel, the reasonable cost of refuelling plus an administration fee will apply.
Security Bond
A security bond is held at the start of the rental and released upon return of the vehicle in satisfactory condition. The bond amount depends on your chosen insurance option.
Infringement Fees
The hirer is responsible for all fines, tolls, parking charges and infringement fees incurred during the rental period. Where permitted by law, we may recover these from the hirer's credit card.
Driver Requirements
All drivers must meet the following requirements before driving any of our campervans.
You must hold a current and valid New Zealand driver licence appropriate for the class of vehicle being hired. Your licence must be presented at collection.
- Licence must be current and not suspended or cancelled
- Must be appropriate for the vehicle class
- All authorised drivers must be listed in the Rental Agreement
Overseas visitors may drive in New Zealand using their valid overseas driver licence. If the licence is not in English, an accurate English translation or International Driving Permit must also be provided.
The driver must not operate the campervan while impaired by alcohol, drugs, fatigue or any other condition that makes driving unsafe or unlawful. All drivers must comply with New Zealand's drink-driving, drug-driving and road-safety laws.
Speeding & Off-roading
New Zealand roads are stunning β but they demand respect. Please read these guidelines carefully.
Off-road Driving Prohibited
Off-road driving or driving on unsuitable, unsealed or flooded terrain is strictly prohibited unless expressly approved in writing. This includes river crossings, beaches, forestry tracks and private farm roads not designated for vehicle use.
Speed Camera Infringements
New Zealand has an extensive network of fixed and mobile speed cameras. All speeding infringements are the hirer's responsibility. Where permitted by NZTA rules, we may charge eligible infringement fees plus an administration fee to the hirer's credit card.
Weather & Road Conditions
New Zealand weather can change rapidly, especially in mountain passes, the South Island and rural areas. Always check road conditions before travelling. Do not drive on roads that are flooded, iced, or closed.
Snow Chains
Snow chains are available as an optional extra hire item. They may be legally required on certain alpine passes during winter. Check local requirements before driving in snow-prone areas such as the Crown Range or Lewis Pass.
πΊοΈ New Zealand Road Tips
Keeping New Zealand Sustainable & Clean
Aotearoa New Zealand is one of the world's most beautiful places. Help us keep it that way.
Self-Containment Certified
All our campervans hold a current NZ green self-containment certification. This means you can legally freedom camp in designated areas without needing a powered site β reducing pressure on popular campgrounds.
Leave No Trace
Take all rubbish with you. Never leave litter at freedom camping spots, beaches, trails or roadsides. Use designated waste disposal facilities wherever possible.
Waste Disposal
Use the campervan's certified cassette toilet. Empty cassette waste only at designated dump stations β never in streams, rivers, public toilets or on the ground. Dump station locations are available on the Campervan NZ app and Freedom Camping NZ website.
Water & Waterways
Do not wash the campervan, dishes or clothing in streams, rivers, lakes or near waterways. Use campground facilities. Never discharge grey water near natural water sources.
Fire Safety
Open fires may be prohibited depending on the region and season. Always check local fire restrictions. Never leave a fire unattended and always extinguish fully before leaving.
Respect Nature
Stay on marked tracks. Do not disturb wildlife, remove plants or damage natural features. New Zealand's native flora and fauna are protected under the Conservation Act.
Freedom Camping Rules
Freedom camping is only permitted in areas where it is allowed by the relevant local council or Department of Conservation. Always check the Freedom Camping Act and local bylaws before stopping overnight.
Advance Booking Bond & Return Policy
Clear, fair policies so you know exactly where you stand from the moment you book.
Booking Confirmation
Your booking is confirmed upon receipt of the required advance booking bond. The bond amount and applicable cancellation terms will be clearly stated in your booking confirmation.
Security Bond
A security bond is held at the start of the rental period. The amount depends on your chosen insurance cover β NZ$3,000 (Freedom), NZ$1,500 (Traveller) or NZ$0 (Complete Cover). The bond is released upon satisfactory return of the vehicle.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellation fees, refunds and applicable deadlines are stated in your booking confirmation. All cancellation terms comply with the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and applicable New Zealand consumer law.
Vehicle Return
The campervan must be returned at the agreed date, time and location in the same condition as collected, with the same fuel level. Late returns without prior approval may incur additional daily charges.
Bond Release
The security bond is released after the vehicle has been inspected and confirmed returned in satisfactory condition. Any deductions for damage, fuel, cleaning or other applicable charges will be explained to you at the time of return.
